OSU! Mobile is a fan-made rhythm game originally released on the Microsoft Windows platform. Developed using C# and based on the .NET Framework, the game has subsequently been released on various platforms, including Mac OS, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. In osu!, players must click circles, drag sliders, and spin spinners on the beat of the music, similar to games like "Ouendan" and "Elite Beat Agents" on the Nintendo DS. During gameplay, players continuously move the cursor and perform clicking actions, using devices such as a mouse, graphics tablet, or trackball. Clicking actions can be performed using keyboards, mice, graphics tablets, or touch screens.
Gameplay
Players interact with different objects on the beatmap using the cursor, with the main objects being as follows:
Hit Circle: Appearance: A hit circle along with an approaching circle that appears during the process.
Execution: When a hit circle appears, an approaching circle appears outside the circle and begins to shrink. Players need to move the cursor to the circle and click when the white border of the approaching circle overlaps with the circle. Each click results in scoring and combo judgment, while misses interrupt the combo and deduct life points.
Slider: Appearance: A slider consists of a starting circle, ending circle, and a slider path between them. A ball moves uniformly along the slider's path during the process, with a follow circle appearing on the slider's path. Some sliders may also include reverse arrows and slider ticks, depending on the mapper's choice.
Execution: Like hit circles, players need to click the starting circle when the approaching circle overlaps it. Then, players must click and hold the cursor while dragging along the path. During this process, players must follow the ball within the follow circle until the end of the slider. Some sliders may end with reverse arrows, requiring players to backtrack along the original path. Each slider tick provides additional scoring and combo, contributing to the overall score.
Spinner: Appearance: A spinner occupies the entire game window, along with an approaching circle and an RPM display.
Execution: As the spinner appears, the approaching circle begins to shrink. Players must drag the cursor and continuously rotate around the center of the spinner until the approaching circle overlaps with the center. This process constitutes one spin. Unlike hit circles and sliders, spinners do not contain circles or sliders, allowing players to focus solely on rotation. During rotation, the meters on both sides continuously rise until filled. Each extra rotation after filling awards a bonus of "1000" points, with scoring and combo judgment still applied after spinner completion. The maximum rotation speed of a spinner is 477 RPM, making it the most influential object in terms of score and ranking among all game modifiers and accuracy.
osu! Taiko
Also known as the Taiko mode, named after the Japanese traditional percussion instrument Taiko. Gameplay is similar to Taiko no Tatsujin, where players hit indicators on the screen at the right time.
This mode supports unique gameplay experiences, allowing players to use Wiimotes and TaTaCon from the Wii to simulate drumming.
In May 2015, enthusiasts developed an unofficial Android ver called "T-Aiko!" and released an iOS ver in November of the same year.
Gameplay: Players use four designated keys on the keyboard as drumsticks to hit the drum's four actions on the screen and earn points. The arrangement of the preset keyboard keys (ZXCV) somewhat mimics the drumming positions.
"Don" and "Katsu": Appearance: "Don" is represented by a red circle, while "Katsu" is blue. Both produce sounds corresponding to their names upon completion.
Execution: Each circle represents an action that players must drum. "Don" represents hitting the drum surface (preset as XC), while "Katsu" represents hitting the drum edge (preset as ZV). If a large circle appears, players must hit both the drum surface and edge simultaneously.
"Drum Rolls": Appearance: "Drum Rolls" are represented by long yellow sticks.
Execution: Within a certain time frame, players must hit a certain number of times according to the rhythm.
"Spinner": The spinner in Taiko mode is equivalent to balloon drum rolls in Taiko no Tatsujin, replaced by a spinner in osu!
Appearance: It resembles a shrunken version of the spinner in osu!
Execution: Although similar in appearance to osu!'s spinner, players do not rotate around the center with the cursor but instead quickly complete the specified number of hits. Unlike "Drum Rolls," "Don" and "Katsu" must be alternately hit.
osu! Catch The Beat
Also known as the CTB mode, it is also referred to as the "fruit-catching" mode in Chinese player groups.Numerous fruits fall from the top of the screen, and players must control their character to catch the falling fruits.
Players move the character with the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard, and holding the left key or Shift allows for faster movement.
When two fruits have a large gap between them, the system automatically accelerates, and the background flashes red.
osu!mania
This mode was developed by the player woc2006 and went online in mid-October 2012. The mode draws inspiration from games like O2Jam, DJMax, and Beatmania.Players see notes or sliders falling from different positions at the top of the screen and must press or hold the corresponding keys at specific times to complete the game.
