Players & Cards

Tong-its is exclusively for three players, utilizing a standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards (jokers excluded). The ranking of cards in each suit is as follows: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King. An Ace is valued at 1 point, while Jacks, Queens, and Kings are each worth 10 points. All other cards hold their face value.

Objective

The goal of the game is to draw and discard cards to create sets and runs while minimizing the number of unmatched cards left in your hand.

A run consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (note that A-K-Q of a suit does not qualify as a run since Aces are considered low in this game).

A set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank. A card can only be part of one combination at a time; it cannot be used in both a set and a run simultaneously.

The Deal

The first dealer is selected randomly, and subsequent dealers are determined by the winner of the previous hand. Cards are dealt one at a time in a counterclockwise direction, starting with the dealer: the dealer receives thirteen cards, while each of the other players gets twelve cards. The remaining deck is placed face down to form the stock.

The Game Mechanics

Each turn involves the following steps:

Drawing Cards Start your turn by selecting one card from either the top of the stock pile or the top card from the discard pile to add to your hand. You can only take a card from the discard pile if you can form a meld (either a set or a run) with it, and you must reveal that meld.

Revealing Melds If you have valid melds (sets or runs) in your hand, you can choose to reveal any of them on the table in front of you. If you drew from the stock pile, revealing melds is optional; you are not required to do so just because you can. Keep in mind that melds kept in your hand do not count against you at the end of the game. To consider the hand opened, a player must lay down at least one meld. In a special scenario where you can form a set of four without drawing from the discard pile, you may place the set face down. This allows you to "open" your hand while retaining the bonus for a secret set of four and keeping your cards hidden from other players.

Adding to Melds (Laying Off) This action is also optional. You may choose to add cards to sets or runs that you or other players have already melded. There is no limit to how many cards you can lay off in a single turn, and you do not need to have opened your hand to do so. If you lay off a card on another player's exposed meld, that player cannot call Draw on their next turn.

Discarding At the conclusion of your turn, you must discard one card from your hand and place it face up on the discard pile.
