Grid Walking
Introduction
• Grid Walking is a unique experience in what we call “competitive slow‑gaming,” where exploration is measured not by speed, but by patience, persistence, and strategic movement.
• Instead of racing through virtual worlds, you roam the real one, interacting directly with your surroundings.
How It Works
• Enable GPS on your device and start walking anywhere in the world.
• The app divides the Earth’s surface into a grid, with each square representing a specific geographic area.
• As you physically enter a square, Grid Walking automatically records your visit.
• A progression mechanic encourages exploration: every 3 squares visited earn you the 4th square for free, while also unlocking the ability to claim larger squares.
• Your main challenge becomes: How large a square can you achieve before running out of reachable areas?
Bonus Areas and Points
• Certain locations are flagged as bonus areas.
• Visiting these awards bonus points that can be spent strategically.
• Bonus points allow you to long‑press on the map and mark otherwise unreachable squares as visited.
• Since bonus points are limited, thoughtful resource management is key to expanding your claimed territory.
Technology and Licensing
• Grid Walking uses the “osmdroid” tool from OpenStreetMap to display and manage maps.
• Osmdroid is distributed under the Apache License 2.0.
• The implementation in Grid Walking is unmodified from the original release.
Permissions Required
To function correctly, Grid Walking requires the following permissions:
• Location: Needed to determine your physical position and mark visited squares accurately.
• Networking: Required to download map tiles and update geographic information in real time.
Goal and Strategy
• Grid Walking is not about moving the fastest; it’s about exploring, planning routes, and making tactical decisions on where to go and how to use your resources.
• Whether you are wandering through your neighborhood or traveling abroad, every step contributes to your grid conquest.
FAQ
Q: How does the app know where I’ve been?
A: The app uses your device’s GPS to pinpoint your location. As soon as you enter a new grid square in the real world, Grid Walking automatically records that square as visited, so you don’t have to manually log anything.
Q: What’s the point of visiting squares in the grid?
A: The main challenge is to see how large or strategically connected your claimed area can become. The more squares you visit, the more territory you secure. Plus, the game rewards persistence: for every three squares you visit, you earn the fourth square for free.
Q: How do the “larger squares” work?
A: When you’ve earned free squares through exploration, you unlock the ability to claim bigger squares that cover more area at once. This gives you a strategic advantage in expanding your territory faster—especially if you plan your routes carefully.
