Forfeit is an innovative accountability app designed to motivate you by putting your money on the line if you fail to stick to your habits. Grounded in the scientifically supported idea of Habit Contracts, which gained popularity through the book Atomic Habits, the app leverages the powerful incentive of financial loss to drive commitment.

With over 20,000 users, Forfeit boasts an impressive 94% success rate across more than 75,000 forfeits, with users collectively staking over $1 million.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Define your forfeit

Choose the habit you want to maintain, set a deadline for completion, and determine the amount you'll forfeit if you don't follow through.

2. Provide proof of completion

Confirm that you've completed your habit using one of the verification methods outlined below. This could include a photo, a timelapse, self-verification, a friend's confirmation, GPS check-in, web tracking, a Strava run, a Whoop activity, a MyFitnessPal meal log, or any other relevant evidence.

3. Or face a financial penalty

If you fail to submit your proof on time, you will lose money. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence, with only 6% of forfeits resulting in a loss. If you do miss the mark, you have the option to appeal the forfeit; we want to ensure that setbacks are due to willpower challenges, not unexpected life events!

VERIFICATION METHODS

• Photo

Capture an image of the completed task, and our AI will check if it aligns with your description.

Examples: At the gym, inbox zero, completed Duolingo, homework turned in, taking medication.

• Timelapse

Create a timelapse video of yourself completing the task, which will then be verified by a human reviewer.

Examples: Meditating, following a nighttime routine, stretching, working for an hour.

• Self-Verify

Simply confirm that you accomplished the task without needing any evidence!

Examples: No smoking, no drinking, no vaping, or any other personal commitment!

• Friend-Verify

Have a trusted friend confirm whether you completed the task or not.

Examples: No drinking, no phone use at home, avoiding junk food.

• GPS Check-in

Establish a GPS location that you must reach within 100 meters by the deadline.

Examples: Checking into the gym, arriving at work on time, getting home by a specific hour.

• GPS Avoidance

Designate a location to steer clear of within a specific radius by a set deadline.

Examples: Avoiding a bar on weekends, or leaving home by a particular time.

• RescueTime Sync

We connect with RescueTime, a web-based time management tool. This allows you to establish limits on various websites and desktop applications.

Examples: Spend no more than 30 minutes on reddit.com, at least 2 hours on VSCode, and a maximum of 30 minutes on gmail.com.

• Pomodoro Timer

This timer operates on a strict basis—if you click away, you fail.

Examples: Focus for 30 minutes, meditate for 20 minutes, or study for 45 minutes.

OTHER FEATURES

• Set Days per Week: Assign forfeits to occur a specific number of times each week (e.g., exercise 3 times a week).

• Specific Days of the Week: Schedule forfeits to apply only on designated days (e.g., weekdays or Monday/Wednesday/Friday).

• Appeal Process: If you need to miss a submission, submit an appeal, and a human will review it within a few hours.

• Flexible Leniency Modes: Depending on your chosen leniency level (lenient, normal, hard), you may or may not need to provide evidence for your appeal. Hard mode does not permit appeals.

• Text Accountability: If you don’t meet your goal, a text will be sent to your friends to inform them of your failure.

FAQ

Q: What is Forfeit, and how does it work to motivate users?

A: Forfeit is an app that helps you build and maintain habits by making you financially accountable for not following through. If you fail to complete the habit you've set for yourself by the deadline, you forfeit a predetermined amount of money.

Q: Can you explain what a "Habit Contract" is?

A: A Habit Contract is a commitment device where you pledge to engage in a specific behavior, with the risk of losing something of value (like money) if you don't follow through. It's based on the principle from "Atomic Habits" that financial stakes increase the motivation to succeed.

Q: How does the verification process work?

A: After setting your habit and deadline, you need to provide proof of completion via methods like photos, GPS check-ins, or integration with services like Strava or MyFitnessPal. If you fail to provide this proof on time, your forfeit is processed.
